Oakwood Sound Design - Equipment List

OSD's philosophy on equipment is simple: Buy great gear, master it, and use it to it's fullest to produce a wide range of sounds for our clients!

We believe this philosophy is reflected in the list below. Of particular note are the Neumann, Schoeps, and Royer microphones, outboard preamps, and the TC Electronic System 6000 multichannel processor.

If you are looking for a facility with a particular piece of gear, please don't hesitate to contact us! We have certainly been known to buy a piece of gear for a particular project! And just about anything can be rented.

Outboard A/D conversion
- Apogee Rosetta – great clean industry standard sound – excels at rock/pop styles - TC Electronic System 6000 using ADA96 cards w/ multiple response filters – wonderful sound & extremely versatile, from perfectly linear to vintage sound at the touch of a button!
Studio Recorder
- Soundchaser NeundoDAW PC w/ RAID-5 hard drive array – This machine was custom made by Soundchaser, a company renowned for building audio PC’s. Tested at 200 tracks of simultaneous playback, this PC includes an RME Project Hammerfall 9652 card set offering 56 physical channels to/from the console. It also incorporates a Universal Audio UAD-1 DSP card/effects bundle, many VST effects, and virtual instruments (see below).
Location Recorders
- ADK Nuendo-based laptop PC – many of the same features of the "monster" PC we use in the studio – this enables us to record concerts and live sessions that don't need the high track count the MDR (below) offers in the same format as we are using the studio – just come back from the gig and transfer the project via the network to our main PC and we're ready for post production! - Mackie MDR2496 24-track – stand-alone recorder with analog and digital I/O and removable hard drive bay – great for recording live events when many channels are needed!
Effects - Outboard & VST
- TC Electronic System 6000 – Incredible multichannel FX processor; Industry leading reverbs, multiband compression, & mastering tools; industry standard delays and chorus; cutting-edge noise reduction and automatic up/down-mixing to/from mono to/from 6.1 surround. This processor has been used as one of the primary FX boxes for countless commercial albums and films! - Universal Audio UAD-1 Bundle – DSP card in PC which offers Real Verb Pro (the high end reverb plugin from Kind of Loud Technologies - the same as distributed for ProTools HD), DreamVerb, Nigel (an amazing guitar effects/amp modeler), Cambridge EQ, and digital models of the venerable Universal Audio LA-2A and 1176 compressors, and Pultec EQ – all mainstays at high end commercial facilities. It also includes digital models of the rare Fairchild 670 program limiter and the vintage EMT 250 plate reverb machine. Evolving beyond it's beginnings, updates have featured stunning models of Neve gear and other pieces of vintage goodness! The technicians and top producers who developed this card at UA dare you to hear the difference from the analog units! In fact, they brought in several high-profile producers and engineers and you know what?... they couldn't tell the difference either! - TC Electronic Powercore Firewire – more great TC processing done on dedicated outboard DSP chips and linked to our editing environment as VST plugins; includes many great effects and virtual instruments, plus it's been upgraded to include some of the processes from the System 6000 so we can run even more instances of those incredible VSS3 reverbs or MD3 mastering processes and have total recall automatically the next time we load your project! - Line 6 Pod XT – We prefer to mic cabinets for guitar tones but have actually gotten some pretty convincing results using this unit along with a nice "goo-ey" Pultec tube EQ ; Plus it's great for processing other tracks when you want to add some grit or just downright nastiness to them, especially when you want to hear it live as you record. - Waves Diamond Bundle – amazing array of effects, from the standards to the bizarre; includes the FX from the Gold Bundle, Mastering Bundle, Renaissance Bundle, Restoration Bundle, and Waves Transform Bundle FX packages - Waves IR-1 Sampling Reverb – Put your tracks inside real rooms such as the Sydney Opera House, a small bathroom, or anywhere in between. - Waves SSL Bundle - Melodyne – amazing, natural-sounding pitch & time manipulation - Antares package – Auto-Tune, Harmony, AVOX, Microphone Modeler, Filter, & The Tube - Voxengo AnalogFlux Suite – versatile analog tape simulation, from smooth and silky to dowright gritty - IK Multimedia Amplitube - IK Multimedia T-Racks 24 – mastering suite; top-notch digital modeling offers a beautiful "analog" sound! - BIAS SoundSoap Pro – amazing restoration toolset - Oxford Inflator - GRM Tools - Native Instruments Spektral Delay - Lexicon, TC Works, Prosoniq, Timeworks, Akai, & Ohm Force suites - Sony SFX 1&2, Acoustic Modeler, and Noise Reduction - the numerous FX that come with Nuendo including Magneto (analog tape emulation), Quadra Fuzz, Apogee UV-22HR dithering, and many others - much, much more!
